4 things to consider before purchasing a bedsheet

Sleep in Style: 4 Key Factors to Consider When Choosing the Perfect Bedsheet

What’s one thing that everyone loves and does every night? Sleep! A good night's sleep is what everyone deserves and loves. We spend every night on our beds so it is safe to say that spending money on great quality bedding is a must. From thread counts to softness, there are so many things some people don't know what to look for when it comes to bedding. Here are what to consider before purchasing a bedsheet:

Material/ Softness

Softness

There are a variety of materials to choose from when it comes to bed sheets, but not many people know how each one makes them different from others. There are four types: Cotton, Linen, Synthetic and Plant-based.

Cotton: There are different types of cotton fabrics that give different feelings of softness at the night. There is Percale, Sateen and Jersey cotton each with its own characteristics.

Percale cotton is a lightweight fabric made from long staple cotton that is tightly woven with a “crisp” feeling and a matte appearance. This fabric is quite breathable which is the perfect choice for anybody who is a hot sleeper.

Sateen cotton is three over one under weave which is loose making it a little more heavier than percale. Sateen has a smooth and silky feel and also has a bit of a shine to it. Sleeping in sateen may give you a little more comfort and warmth.

Another type of popular cotton is Jersey. This type of bedsheet is more found in college dorms due to its affordable price and also because of the great feeling it gives you. Jersey is different from percale and sateen, Jersey is knitted and not woven from either cotton or a cotton blend making it a soft and cozy feel with low maintenance.

Linen:

Linen is made from a flax plant and has a rougher texture than cotton that many people find quite appealing. This material is quite breathable which is a great option for people who sometimes sweat at night. It is more durable than cotton and after each use, it becomes softer and softer!

Certifications

When looking for bed sheets, it is best to take a look at the certifications. They help you out and help you know what type of bedsheet would be best for you. Here are a few that you may see:

  • OEKO-TEX: Environment-friendly and socially responsible production
  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): About 95% of the materials they use in a product are organic.
  • Eco-INSTITUT: Certified that their products have no pollutants and any hazardous chemicals.
  • Wrinkle-resistant: Have some caution with wrinkle-free, it often means that that product may contain carcinogens such as formaldehyde.

Clean Care

The key to keeping your bedsheets in good condition is to clean your sheets regularly. No matter the material of your bedsheets, after every wash your bedsheets should be softer after every wash. Before every wash, take a look at the label attached to it and find out how to wash your bed sheet properly. Most sheets are okay to put in the dryer but still check the label to make sure, Some sheets need to be air dried which will keep them durable.

Thread Count

Thread Count

There’s a saying that the higher the thread count the softer the sheets, but that's not entirely true. There are many sheets that are super comfy and they have a low thread count and itchy, uncomfortable sheets with a high thread count. To find the right bed sheets that best fit you, the most important thing is the fabric/material. When it comes to sleep, it’s very important that your bed is comfortable for you to catch some zzz’s. Without the proper tools, you may be uncomfortable and may not get enough sleep. If you care a lot about your sleep, then purchasing the right sheets for your bedding is definitely worth every penny.
